New library building
With a growing student body, the creation of new chairs and institutes and an increasing number of staff, the university's capacities were being stretched to the limit. The referendum of 1971, when Swiss voters approved the partial relocation of the university, and the new building regulations of 1977 laid the legal foundations for the compression of the universiy's perimeter and the enlargement of the Irchel campus. For the Faculty of Law, this meant merging various departments – previously scattered throughout the city – and concentrating them at Rämistrasse 74. Since 2003 this address has been the main building of the Faculty of Law and the new faculty library. The project to build the new library was announced in 1989, but planning permission was not granted until July 2000. The project included the construction of a new library building in the courtyard, the addition of a roof and basement to the courtyard, the addition of two storeys to the north-west and north-east wings, the refurbishment of the entrance area, and modifications to the fabric of the existing building. The library was opened in November 2004.
